Book excerpt: This is an account of Sir Humphrey's last voyage to Newfoundland. Edward Hayes was the Captain and owner of 'The Golden HInd' which was the only one of three ships to make the return journey from Newfoundland to England. He witnesses the sinking of the ship on which Sir Humphrey sailed and lost his life. Sir Humphrey was a wealthy man who wished to establish a Christian colony at St John, a harbour in Newfoundland. It cost him his fortune and eventually his life.
