Book excerpt: Excerpt from American-Russian Rivalry in the Far East: A Study in Diplomacy and Power Politics, 1895-1914 Wiih American expansion Eastward in the last decade of the nineteenth century, the tradition of friendship between the United States and Russia, which had existed for almost. A hundred years, gave way to a period of rivalry. This rivalry in the Far East, the subject of the present study, was, in the main, a result of economic competition in Manchuria which began as early as 1895. Following the Boxer upheaval of 1900, relations between the two powers became critical, and reached a climax in the russo-japanese War of 1904 - 5. They continued in a state of tension during the taft-knox administration until President Wilson in 1913 withdrew governmental support from the six-power consortium.
